Looking for a new adventure with your pup in Fairfield County? I love discovering fresh spots to explore, and these have quickly become my go-to favorites!

If you’re navigating life with a reactive pup, I’ve got you covered! I also highlight how suitable these spots are for puppies and reactive dogs to ensure a positive and stress-free experience for everyone.

Lake Mohegan Open Space (Fairfield, CT)

A beautiful 170.4-acre area featuring trails, a designated swimming spot for dogs, and stunning scenery. Personally, I really enjoy the “red loop,” which circles the lake.

Most of the area is designated as off-leash, so having a solid recall command is essential. While I’ve been fortunate not to have any negative experiences with unfriendly dogs, I wouldn’t recommend these trails if your dog struggles with reactivity. Instead, consider low-exposure training in the parking lot, where you can observe other dogs (mostly leashed) from a safe distance.

There is a huge parking lot that provides free parking during the winter.
Pro-Tip: Make sure to bring your rain boots and a few towels for your dog - there will be mud, especially after it rains!

Jennings Beach (Fairfield, CT)

From October 1 to March 31, Jennings Beach in Fairfield welcomes dogs, and it’s one of our favorite spots! Stroll along the shore in the crisp air while your pup takes a dip in the Long Island Sound or sniffs out treasures like shells in the sand. It’s the ultimate beach adventure!

On weekends, the beach transforms into an impromptu dog park, making it a fantastic spot for socializing. However, I recommend heading to the quieter side near the Marina or visiting on a weekday morning for a more relaxed experience. During the winter months, parking is free and hassle-free.

As with any public space, ensure your dog has reliable recall or keep them leashed to ensure a safe and enjoyable outing for everyone. (Here more info on the rules by Fairfield Parks and Recreation)

St. Mary's by the Sea (Bridgeport, CT)

If you’re looking for a less muddy option, check out the beautiful St. Mary’s in Black Rock, CT. There’s a scenic paved walking trail along the water, perfect for catching stunning sunsets and sunrises! Dogs must be leashed. If your pup struggles with reactivity, keep in mind that the trail narrows in some spots, so you might prefer the open grassy areas beside the path.

If you want to do this with a puppy, I´d recommend keeping the walk short and be mindful of your baby dog`s short attention span.

For those with high-energy dogs seeking a longer walk, I recommend completing the entire loop and wrapping up your adventure with a latte and a delicious sandwich at Harborview Market—a neighborhood favorite! While dogs aren’t allowed inside, their charming outdoor seating area is perfect for you and your pup. And don’t leave without trying their freshly baked cookies—my personal favorite is the Dark Chocolate & Sea Salt!

I hope these tips inspire your next adventure with your dog! Feel free to reach out if you have any questions or want to share your favorite hiking spots—I’d love to discover new ones!

"Bianca truly gets to the root of the problem."

"Hands down, Bianca is the best and most experienced dog trainer on so many levels--she's more than a trainer--she truly gets to the root of the problem. We've worked with several trainers over the years, and we've never had one with such an incredible disposition and strong animal behavior acumen. Her feedback, tips and overall approach made everything feel achievable. The analogies Bianca uses truly help things click—we finally understood the why behind the training. We've always felt overwhelmed by dog training in the past, but this was easy to grasp, practical, and made complete sense. She's made our home of four dogs much more pleasant and calm!"
