Why Is My Australian Shepherd So Restless?

Does your Aussie constantly follow you around the house—whether you're in the bedroom, bathroom, or even just grabbing a snack from the kitchen? No matter how much exercise and playtime they get, do they still seem unable to relax?

Owning a herding breed can be frustrating because they often seem incapable of settling down. And here’s the kicker—if you think it’s just a phase or something they'll grow out of with age, think again!

Understanding Your Aussie’s Restlessness

Herding breeds, like Australian Shepherds, were designed to be the way they are. They were bred to be fearless, strong-willed, and full of stamina—capable of moving livestock ten times their size over long distances. Their instincts drive them to stay alert, active, and engaged. They weren’t bred to lounge on the couch all day with the occasional stroll around the block.

However, restlessness can sometimes escalate into nervous or anxious behavior, which can impact your dog’s well-being.

Typical signs of nervous & anxious behavior in Australian Shepherds

Here are some common signs that your Aussie’s restlessness may be linked to anxiety:

  • Inability to settle – Constant pacing, circling, or shifting positions without ever fully relaxing.
  • Excessive following – Shadowing you from room to room, even when there’s no clear reason to do so.
  • Panting or drooling – Signs of stress, even when they haven’t been exercising.
  • Destructive behavior – Chewing furniture, scratching doors, or digging excessively.
  • Whining or barking – Vocalizing frequently, especially when left alone.
  • Dilated Pupils – Dilated pupils are a typical sign of stress and can also be a sign of overstimulation
  • Excessive licking –Excessively licking and grooming even if they seem clean

How to Support Your Restless Aussie

If you suspect anxiety is at play, it’s important to address it with a combination of mental stimulation, structured training, and relaxation techniques. I recommend working with a professional dog trainer and a trusted veterinarian to develop a tailored approach that supports your dog’s emotional and physical needs.

As a Professional Dog Trainer specializing in herding breeds I´ve helped countless of Aussie parents with their hyper, workaholic pup!

"Bianca truly gets to the root of the problem."

"Hands down, Bianca is the best and most experienced dog trainer on so many levels--she's more than a trainer--she truly gets to the root of the problem. We've worked with several trainers over the years, and we've never had one with such an incredible disposition and strong animal behavior acumen. Her feedback, tips and overall approach made everything feel achievable. The analogies Bianca uses truly help things click—we finally understood the why behind the training. We've always felt overwhelmed by dog training in the past, but this was easy to grasp, practical, and made complete sense. She's made our home of four dogs much more pleasant and calm!"
